Dead The Ugly Beginning TW Brown 9781936730445 Books
I originally read the Kindle version 11/19/2012 and just finished the audio version today. Although I've read most of the series, I decided to start over from the beginning prior to reading the last three since it's been so long since I immersed myself in the DEAD world. My rating remains a 5 star. The narrator was excellent.
There are a lot of talented zombie authors out there who I enjoy reading. And TW Brown's DEAD series is my favorite of the zombie lit.
Mr. Brown takes you into the heart of the story from the beginning with awesome characters -- both good and bad and one that is truly dedpicable. He makes you care about the characters and their plight so that you cheer at their successes and feel their pain when they're hurting.
Lots of great zombie action and all the gore that goes with it, but this book is definitely character/emotion driven. If you haven't read it, you're missing out.

Dead The Ugly Beginning TW Brown 9781936730445 Books Reviews
Love, Love, Love this series!! I'm on Dead Box Set 3 and am sad to know I only have 3 more left in this series. I was excited to learn there are more Dead Snapshots of different cities coming out, so I'm not too sad. )
TW Brown is a gifted author! Hooks you from the beginning and doesn't let go. My favorites in this genre so far are; TW Brown, Shawn Chesser and RR Haywood.
At first the "vignettes" in each of these book threw me off but once I caught the rhythm, I loved those too! When they say no one character is safe.......they mean it, trust me! These books will make you stay up well past your bedtime, they're that good. Keep'm coming, Mr. Brown!! Thank you for keeping me entertained. )
Too many characters, especially in the vignette chapters. We'll read about these characters and not see them for about five chapters. For me, this caused confusion and I had to sit and try to remember who they were.
I understood what the author was trying to do, but it may have been better for those vignette characters to have their own book in the series, or maybe a book of short stories within the series. I know the author was setting some characters up to meet up with characters from another vignette or the main story. I'll read the next book, but I hope it's not confusing in places like this one was.
Here is a zombie story that was really good. It's a long one and it's got many characters in it that have different stories. Some of them are there to be main characters, while some of them are just there for a few pages to show us just how far society has fallen and how these characters meet their ends.
The only characters that I didn't like were the Senator lady and her daughters. They were just annoying and didn't seem to do anything other than just be a burden on the main characters in their group.

And frankly when the raiders came and took these women, I would have just let the raider take them. Seriously they are better off without these women in the group who contributed nothing and were just a drain on the resources of the group.

It's a great story and any zombie fan will really enjoy this. Check it out!
These books are very well written. There are NO dull moments, and the author is very adapt at conveying the harshness of the character's realities....maybe too adept. Also, there are a few interesting twists added that are not found in traditional Zombie lore, but are totally in line with it.
The one single reason for me not giving 5 stars is that there are too may stories, some of which kinda peter out and are not connected, and which make it very hard to keep track. There are a few main story lines, though, so I end up just glossing over a few of the minor ones.
In any case, I've got the first 5 in the series, and have read the first 3 of them. I'll buy more as I read them.
Definitely recommended.
If Stephen King wrote a zombie book it would read like Dead The Ugly Beginning. It is a terrific, character-driven book- not gun porn, not made of special forces super heroes, and not told in the voice of a fourteen year old who thinks the zombie apocalypse would be a terrific thing to happen.
DEAD is the tale of unprepared, everyday people doing their best to deal with a nightmare situation. The characters are written in rich, vivid hues and quickly grab your attention. The zombies are a character too and are written the same way- all age ranges and income brackets are there, and each has there own horrible wounds that tell the tale of how they came to be there.
Brown handles the narrative deftly. The story flows along, and though it covers four separate points of view, not to mention several vignettes (the vignettes are wonderful little nuggets that take place away from the main story lines, and tell the story of different people across the country in a few pages) the reader is never confused about where he is in the story or whose tale is being told.
I give Dead the highest and rarest praise I can give a zombie novel- I recommend it to people who don't read the genre or horror. It's just a really damn good book.
As the title says it's the beginning, I've always been a fan of the apocalypse story since I saw Vincent Price in "The Last Man On Earth" in the 60's became a Zombie fan in '78 with "Dawn of the Dead" and have been looking for great Zombie stories ever since, this is the start of a Great series in my opinion & all of the others to follow are there to make your heart pump faster & sometimes stop suddenly, I can't say enough good things about this series, except be prepared to go on a journey that you don't want to end, also do not get attached to any one character Mr. Brown loves to kill them off Horribly, Hahahahahaha. Hope you enjoy.
